How to Know It’s Time to Leave a Job: 5 Clear Signs
March 14, 2025

Deciding whether it’s time to leave a job can feel like standing at a crossroads, unsure which path will lead to growth, fulfillment, and success. It’s not an easy decision, especially when you’ve invested time, energy, and passion into your career. However, staying in a role that no longer aligns with your values, aspirations, or mental well-being can hold you back from reaching your full potential.
If you find yourself questioning whether it’s time to move on, you’re not alone. Many professionals, particularly Black women navigating leadership roles, face unique challenges in determining when it’s time to transition. To help you gain clarity, here are five clear signs that it may be time to say goodbye to your current position.
5 clear signs It’s Time to Leave a Job
1. When You Feel Stuck and Unfulfilled, It’s Time to Leave a Job
Imagine this: You wake up on Monday morning, and instead of feeling excited about the week ahead, you feel a heavy sense of dread. Your tasks feel monotonous, your creativity feels stifled, and you can’t shake the feeling that your skills are being underutilized. This was exactly how my client, Simone, felt before she decided to schedule a coaching session with me.
Simone was a senior manager in healthcare, a role she had worked hard to achieve. Yet, she found herself uninspired and questioning whether this was the right path. During our sessions, it became clear that her job no longer aligned with her long-term vision. She wanted to lead projects that made a tangible difference in underserved communities, but her current role lacked opportunities for innovation and impact.
If you, like Simone, feel uninspired and stuck, it’s a strong indicator that your current role is no longer serving you. And it’s time to leave a job. Staying in a position that doesn’t challenge or fulfill you can lead to stagnation, burnout, and a loss of confidence.
2. Your Values Clash with the Company’s
One of the most common reasons people feel disconnected from their jobs is a misalignment of values. For instance, let’s take Angela, a finance executive who came to me feeling deeply conflicted. Her company’s leadership team frequently made decisions that prioritized profits over ethical practices, leaving her feeling like she was complicit in something that went against her integrity.
Angela’s values centered on fairness, empowerment, and transparency. Qualities she also wanted to see reflected in her workplace. However, the culture she worked in didn’t support these ideals. Over time, the misalignment took a toll on her motivation and well-being.
When you find yourself questioning whether your company’s mission, culture, or leadership aligns with your personal values, it may be time to reassess. Your career should be a source of pride and purpose. Not a source of constant frustration or moral conflict.
3. You’re Facing Workplace Microaggressions or Discrimination
Navigating workplace discrimination or microaggressions is an all-too-familiar struggle for many Black women in leadership. Take the story of Denise, a tech leader who felt isolated in her predominantly white, male workplace. Despite her qualifications and stellar performance, she was often interrupted in meetings, overlooked for promotions, and subjected to subtle yet consistent microaggressions.
Denise described feeling invisible and unsupported, which led to self-doubt and frustration. Together, we worked on strategies to address these challenges while also exploring whether her workplace was the right fit for her long-term goals.
If you’re experiencing similar challenges, know that you’re not alone. These toxic environments can negatively impact your confidence, mental health, and overall career satisfaction. No one deserves to remain in a workplace that leaves them feeling undervalued or unsafe.
4. When Opportunities for Growth Have Plateaued, It’s Time to Leave a Job
Professional growth is a cornerstone of a fulfilling career. Organizations that value their people provide ample opportunities for growth. When promotions, mentorship, or new opportunities are scarce, it’s easy to feel like you’ve hit a ceiling. This was the case for Carla, a nonprofit director who felt like she had outgrown her role.
Carla had been with her organization for nearly a decade, consistently exceeding expectations and taking on additional responsibilities. Yet, when she expressed interest in joining the executive leadership team, she was told she “needed more time” to prove herself. Frustrated by the lack of support and advancement opportunities, Carla decided to explore other options.
If your leadership potential isn’t being cultivated or your contributions aren’t being recognized, it may be time to explore a role where your skills and ambitions are valued.
5. Your Job is Affecting Your Health or Work-Life Balance, It’s Time a Leave Your Job
Let’s talk about Maya, a senior marketing professional who found herself constantly tethered to her laptop, even during family dinners or late at night. Her demanding schedule left her feeling drained, stressed, and disconnected from her loved ones. Worse, she began experiencing physical symptoms like migraines and insomnia.
During our coaching sessions, Maya realized that her job was not only affecting her mental and emotional well-being but also her physical health. Together, we worked on setting boundaries, identifying her career priorities, and ultimately finding a new role that allowed her to achieve a healthier work-life balance.
If your job is taking a toll on your health or personal life, it’s time to reevaluate. A fulfilling career should enhance—not diminish—your quality of life and overall well-being.
The Power of Recognizing When It’s Time to Move On
Sometimes, the hardest part of leaving a job isn’t walking away. But it’s acknowledging that you actually deserve better. Transitioning to a new role can feel daunting, but staying in an unfulfilling or toxic environment can have long-term consequences for your happiness and career.
Each of the women I’ve shared stories about, Simone, Angela, Denise, Carla, and Maya, found new opportunities that aligned with their values, supported their personal growth, and allowed them to lead with confidence. They didn’t just leave their jobs; they reclaimed their power and redefined their careers on their own terms.
