You’re over 40! That means it’s time to put your best foot forward and take on some challenges! We all have those career moments where we question whether or not we really want to be doing what we’re doing. But if you’re working toward a goal or intention, it’s important not to give up. There are 5 things highly successful women over 40 should do before a career makeover. So that they can set their career on a new track and land their dream job.

The habits that gave you success in the past will help you succeed today. If you want to be like highly successful women over 40, here’s a list of actions you can start right away. On the list there are no short cuts. It’s all or nothing. Success takes work–practicing the things you’ve learned and investing in the relationships you’ve built over a lifetime.

When I look at what high achieving women have accomplished in their lives, I wonder if there is a secret that we could all learn. I believe there is. Here is my list of top things highly successful women over 40 should do to make a seamless career makeover. It is based on my own journey as well as the different experiences of those I have spoken with over the years. Most importantly, it is a reminder that you can control your future and that having passion in your life can literally make you rich.

What Is a Career Makeover?

A career makeover is about giving yourself the freedom and opportunity to follow your passion, whether that’s in a city or country you live in or the field of work. If you want to change careers but are locked into a job that doesn’t suit you, thinking about other options can help push you out of your comfort zone and into the unknown. Consider these five things highly successful women over 40 should do before a career makeover. It’s never too late to start your career makeover on the right foot.

1.    Introspection

If you’re looking to reinvent your career, the first thing you should do is examine yourself. Look inside yourself before doing a career makeover. What do you need to change? What’s your current mindset? What truly makes your heart sing? What has been weighing you down? Where have you been feeling unfulfilled. These are great questions that require looking within to find the answers.

2.    Start with Your Vision

What is your purpose? What has been tugging at your heart for a while now? That you been secretly pushing down, saying I’ll get to it one day? What makes you happy just thinking about doing it? Your vision is where you can start designing your career makeover.

3.    Know Your Strengths, Abilities and Unique Value Proposition

Get in touch with your inner strengths and use them to improve your work and life. To rework your career, you’ll have to remodel your life, using the skills and experience that have made you successful in the past. You may need to take a few courses or get a certification for any gaps you may find. May be even do some job shadowing or informational interviews. This is also a great time to consider hiring a career transition coach.

4.    Evaluate Your Relationships, Personal & Professional

For mental and emotional health, relationships are extremely important. Your personal ones, as well as your professional ones. When is the last time you scanned and removed energy vampires from your life? These people can really zap your energy leaving you feeling too drained to pursue your dreams.

Making it seem like career success is too difficult to achieve. Only keep company with those who make you better. Jim Rohn, the motivational speaker, once said you are the average of the five people with whom you frequently spend time. While you may not be able to cut off everybody, you can certainly make your tracks around them much smaller. Freeing up your energy to pursue relationships with those who do support, enrich, or cheer you on.

5.    Plan for the Future

Do you know the skills you need to carry out your future goals? When it comes to your work life or career, what do you want from the future? What about your finances and lifestyle? Travel plans? Mental, physical, and emotional health are all important in your future plans as well.

What’s the secret for successful women over 40? You need to look inside and find what’s keeping you down. Failed relationships, exhaustion, feeling like you’ve given up on your goals or intentions — whatever it is, these things will serve as Trojan horses for misery. The solution is simple — embrace the here and now. Answer the questions contained in each of the five steps. Get back to living in the moment, trusting in God’s creation and plan for the future around it.

A career makeover involves a restructure of your career, a reassessment of your needs (financial and personal) and an evaluation of the course you wish to take for the next 5-10 years.
It’s worth thinking about changing careers. Especially if your current career is making it difficult for you to be self-sufficient or serve others effectively. There’s no reason to stay in a role that makes you unhappy. Many high achieving women over 40 have left their jobs in order to serve others better and/or pursue other interests and passions. Their stories are inspiring, and they prove that changing careers doesn’t have to be tough! Ready for your career makeover and your next inspiring story? How many of those top five things have you already started? I would love to hear from you!
